Nature, stone and centuries-old villages

Lles de Cerdanya is surrounded by natural landmarks and small slices of rural life. A walk around the village is always a good idea, and there are a few visits well worth making.

Things to see

Rocaviva, the magic labyrinth

A little-known attraction, declared a local cultural heritage site in 2010. It is an open-air museum one kilometre from Lles de Cerdanya, made up of more than 600 granite boulders of different sizes carved by the artist Climent Olm.

Stones with faces of every shape and expression, eyes cut into the rock. Art and nature go hand in hand, wrapping the visitor in an air of curiosity and eccentricity.

Orén dolmen

It stands in Prullans and is a megalithic monument from the Bronze Age. These were once sacred places, so much so that bones, necklaces and tools have been found there.

The largest stone, which serves as the roof, is 3.50 metres long, 2.40 metres wide and half a metre thick, and weighs about seven tonnes.

The Devil's Bridge

Halfway between Músser and Lles, it crosses the Molí river. The old path has been restored and is now part of the Cerdanya Trail. The bridge is protected as a local cultural heritage site.

It is a single-arch stone bridge, built of granite bound with mortar. The round arch is achieved by corbelling the stones, and the bridge rests on a pier at each side set into the rocky outcrop of the riverbed. It has no railings: the deck is earth, about two metres wide.

Martinet Bunker Park

More than 70 bunkers of the P Line, the defensive line Franco's regime built across the Pyrenees in the 1940s and 1950s, make up Resistance Centre 53 of Montellà and Martinet. Today it is a place of remembrance, with an interpretation centre, audiovisuals and a permanent exhibition.

The outdoor route around the bunkers is open to all. To go inside the fortifications and the 300 metres of underground galleries of the Cabiscol complex you need to join the guided tour, always booked in advance.

Cadí-Moixeró natural park

It is the range you see from the balcony of the house. If you come to Lles de Cerdanya, the natural park is a must: the limestone walls of the Cadí, the mountain pine forests and the high meadows, with a network of trails and huts for every level.

Charming villages

A journey back in time, a few bends away

The Cerdanya has plenty of them. Visiting them means strolling through streets that keep their medieval layout. These are the closest to the house.

Músser in the mist, from the Lles road
8.5 km · 13 min

Músser

Inhabited since the Neolithic, Músser has been documented since the 10th century, when it was called Munciar. The streets of the old quarter and the main square fully preserve their medieval layout: old houses with stone arcades, wooden balconies and voussoir doorways, a whole that has survived thanks to its relative isolation. Until well into the 20th century it was the only municipality in the Cerdanya where vines were grown.

Tradition has it that Músser had a castle built by the Muslim leader Musa II, and that the village grew up under its protection. The leader is said to have had a very beautiful daughter, Oria Ben Musa, who died very young and was buried at the place known as prat d'Ambell.

The village of Travesseres among meadows, with the mountain behind
4.7 km · 7 min

Travesseres

It is the southernmost and lowest village in the municipality of Lles. The castle, held by the viscounts of Cerdanya, was granted to the viscounts of Castellbò in the 11th century. The parish church of Sant Jaume is Romanesque in origin, although it has been altered many times; its polychrome carving, a Majesty, is in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

Within the same area is the Sanillés spa, which collects and serves the waters of five springs of different character: Païdor, Muntanya and Riu (alkaline silicate), Brians (sulphurous) and Ferro (sulphurous and ferruginous). The place was already known as Sanillers in the year 1030.

The arcaded square in the old quarter of Bellver de Cerdanya
18 km · 22 min

Bellver de Cerdanya

Bellver lies halfway between Puigcerdà and La Seu d'Urgell. The municipality is a cluster of villages, isolated farmhouses and hamlets that make it one of the largest in the district. It was founded in 1225 by Nunó Sanç on the hill of Bello Vedere, from which it takes its name.

Highlights include the arcaded square of the old quarter and the steps down to the Plaça del Portal, and the church of Santa Maria de Talló, known as the cathedral of the Cerdanya. Walking around, you feel transported to the Middle Ages.
